how to distinguish silver plated from solid silverware?
I’ve come into possession of a number of items such as sugar-bowl, teapot etc, and would like to know is there any way I can establish if they are solid or plated silver without dragging them to an expert (a long way from here!)
Silver will have “sterling” and the percentage stamped somewhere……..like .9something (I can’t remember exactly) Plate will have the manufacturers name and that’s about it. If no markings, they are probably plate and may be resilvered. True sterling is heavy. Plate can be quite light……especially the newer stuff.
